    Real-Time Signal Processing in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) at Fraunhofer IPT
    Optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems are developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) for medical and industrial applications. OCT is an imaging technique that relies on a signal processing chain. This chain used in Fraunhofer’s OCT systems covers, e.g., the acquisition of data from a line scan camera, image-related adjustments, a Fourier transformation, and the reduction of signal noise. Since these OCT systems are required to provide high spatial and temporal resolution in production setups, e.g., video frame rate (25 frames/s), the parallelization and tuning of the signal processing chain is crucial. more

    Towards Software-Based Real-Time Singles and Coincidence Processing in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) at the Institute for Experimental Molecular Imaging (ExMI)
    For the deployment of novel PET scanners developed in the context of the HYPMED project, the institute for Experimental Molecular Imaging (ExMI) aims at utilizing software-based approaches for its singles and coincidence processing chain. Contrary to current hardware-based implementations, this allows for easier prototyping and the retrieval of raw scanner data, which would otherwise be lost. However, achieving real-time processing throughput becomes a challenge with the increasing data streams of the scanners and the growing complexity of state-of-the-art positioning algorithms. more

  • Accurate Simulation of the Crystallization Process in Injection Molded Plastic Components at the Institute for Plastics Processing (IKV)
    Injection molding is very important in plastics processing since it enables cheap and easily adaptable large-scale production of plastic components. As the microstructure of semicrystalline thermoplastics has a huge impact on the mechanical properties, the Institute for Plastics Processing at RWTH Aachen University (IKV) has developed the simulation software SphäroSim which can predict the microstructure of semicrystalline thermoplastics during solidification. Due to the long runtime of the simulation, high-resolution simulations are restricted to small areas. more

Physikalisches Institut B at RWTH Aachen University with the analysis of the data gathered by AMS. more

    MPEG Standardization
    The RWTH is involved in the development of a new standard for the compression of audio and video files (Versatile Video Coding, VVC). With the VVC method, a higher compression efficiency of the data is accompanied, which is fundamental for various future applications such as 4K streaming or virtual reality. The use of High-Performance Computing capacities such as CLAIX is essential for the extremely complex coding process which ends up in the new VVC standard. more

    All-electron DFT simulations of particle-like magnetic objects
    The project aims at performing ab initio calculations of complex magnetic textures and particle-like structures like skyrmions and Bloch points. Recent performance improvements of the full-potential all-electron DFT code FLEUR made it possible to tackle large non- collinear magnetic setups with over thousands of atoms and thus will provide new insights into electronic properties of such systems. more
