The IT Center's archiving service makes it possible for users to preserve data in the long term using a tape library. The data are safely stored, as there are no automatic data replacement processes or pre-defined retention periods in place: users have full control over their archived data.
Thus, the archive provides highly safe and secure data storage, e.g. for measuring results, research results, and project documentation.
The system is designed in such a way that the failure of individual components, as a rule, does not result in a failure of the entire system. For protection purposes, the system has redundant components, including all network and storage area network (SAN) connections as well as the tape robot arm.
The use of several server machines makes it possible to maintain operation using established methods of collection. In this way, operational interruptions can be reduced to a minimum. The IT Center guarantees data persistence. In order to achieve this high level of data persistence, there is a partnership between RWTH Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich: Jülich mirrors the IT Center's archive and vice versa.
