In yoga asanas, pranayama, and concentration are of central importance. Different postures, the asanas, harmonize organ functions and improve health. Breathing techniques – pranayama – lead to emotional balance. By concentrating on the body's vital points, the spirit and mind come to rest.
Short Yoga Dictionary
There are numerous styles of yoga, which might appear similar. But there are more calm and slow styles of yoga, like Hatha and Yin Yoga, and there are yoga types that are more dynamic and demanding such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow and Power Yoga. In the following some examples are presented.
The word Ashtanga originates from Sanskrit, the saint language of India and can be translated as “8 limbs”. Different sequences, “pattabhi jois”, are given which are practiced in the same order. This is an intense style of yoga in which breathing is connected to the movements with smooth transitions.
Hatha means “power, endurance, energy” (Sanskrit) and is the general term concerning all physical styles of yoga, in contrast to other mental exercises and mediations. It covers different body postures (Asanas), breathing exercises (Pranayama), and deep relaxation (Shavasana) and it is the fundament of other styles of yoga. Still, it developed to an independent yoga style that focusses on holding positions.
Vinyasa Flow Yoga
The Vinyasa Flow Yoga derives from the Ashtanga Yoga, but provides space for creativity and choreographies. There are no solid sequences.
This type of yoga focusses on the smooth transitions between the different Asanas connecting to the breath. Vinyasa Flow courses are sportively intense.
Yin Yoga is more calm type of yoga focusing on holding positions of Asanas passively and paying attention to stretching exercises as an addition to the demanding yoga styles. Most exercises are conducted in sitting or lying.
Thereby deeper body layers of the connecting tissue, tendons and fascia are reached in order to improve flexibility and to loosen blockades.
Yin Yoga harmonizes the flow of energy in body and attracts attention to the inner balance.
Depending on the size of the room participation is limited to 20 to 35 people.
