Virtual Server Hosting

Target Groups

The IT Center makes it possible for university institutions to rent virtual machines (VMs), providing an alternative to the purchase and operation of server hardware by the institutions. The IT Center is responsible for setting up and maintaining the virtual machines and ensures the availability of the server resources.

The commissioning institution is provided with user interfaces for VM control – power on, power off, reset – and for the use of installation media. The interfaces can be used from any location from within the RWTH IP networks. For a snaphot function, which is available via the user interface and can be used to secure the VM status in the short run, an additional 10 percent of the total storage capacity of the VM hard drives (vHDDs) is provided.

The server operating system, which can be freely chosen after consultation with the IT Center, is installed and maintained by the hiring institution. The hiring institutions has full access to the operating system and is fully responsible for the software installed on the VM, including the operating system, and for backing up the data stored on the VM hard disks.

VMs can be ordered online via SeviRe. The current offers and prices can be found there.
