KI:connect is a state-wide platform for universities in North Rhine-Westphalia that provides centralized, data-protection-compliant access to generative artificial intelligence via a shared infrastructure.
Various generative AI models can be used via the central web application KI:connect . The platform enables universities to integrate both commercial and open-source models and to flexibly manage their use. In addition, the associated project provides a unified application programming interface (API), cost control functions, and options for integrating their own knowledge bases.
The Project Behind the Service
KI:connect.nrw is a project funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of DH.NRW and implemented by RWTH Aachen University. The goal is to provide universities with centrally organized and privacy-friendly access to generative AI services, thereby facilitating the use of modern AI technologies in studies, teaching, research, and administration.
The project is being implemented jointly by the IT Center and the Center for Teaching and Learning Services (CLS) at RWTH Aachen University. While the IT Center is responsible for development, operation, and technical infrastructure, the CLS provides support with contract drafting as well as didactic and organizational issues related to the use of generative AI at universities in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Since the project’s launch in July 2024, AI:connect.nrw has evolved from a pilot solution into a state-wide AI platform. Several universities in North Rhine-Westphalia are already using the platform in production, making the service currently available to nearly 500,000 students and staff and continuing to grow.
RWTHgpt
RWTH Aachen University also utilizes the services of the state-wide KI:connect.nrw project: With RWTHgpt, a dedicated instance is available that offers students and staff free and privacy-compliant access to generative AI systems.
Various language models and AI tools can be used flexibly via a central web interface. Depending on the model, there are different usage options and restrictions. RWTHgpt is continuously being developed and regularly updated with new features and models.
