The core network (RWTH Backbone) is constantly expanded and modernized according to the current state of the art. This includes installation and operation of new network components as well as the modernization of the existing hardware and cable infrastructure. All active network components are monitored and maintained by the IT Center.

Part of the RWTH Backbone are the central building switches and the internet connection via DFN (Deutsches Forschungsnetz, "German Research Network").
