In April 2026, we will look back on three years of regular operation with Coscine. Since its launch, the platform has become a central component of research data management and supports researchers in their daily work by enabling the structured management, storage, and reuse of their data.
With currently around 4,600 users, 4,500 projects, and 4,400 resources, Coscine is firmly established in the research landscape. A total of approximately 24 petabytes of storage is available, of which 12 petabytes have already been provisioned and around 3 petabytes are actively in use.
Technically, the platform has also undergone continuous development in recent years. With the connection to DataStorage.nrw, the storage infrastructure was expanded and standardized, providing users with greater capacity and higher reliability. At the same time, the API has been further expanded as a central interface to enable automated workflows and integration into existing research processes.
Further developments include improvements around metadata and FAIR principles, such as an expanded PID landing page and the introduction of semantic search functions that enhance the discoverability and reusability of research data.
In addition to technical development, engagement with the community also plays a central role. Feedback from user surveys, support requests, and events is continuously incorporated into the platform’s further development.
Today, Coscine is a stable, established service that forms an important foundation for modern research data management both at RWTH and beyond.
