The 5G-Industry Campus Europe (5G-ICE) is a research infrastructure for the validation of 5G in production and is located on the Campus Melaten of RWTH Aachen University.

Participating institutions are:

A complete 5G mobile radio infrastructure will be established for the realization of the projects (use cases) and the research projects.

On the one hand, the complete 5G ecosystem consists of indoor networks in the machine halls of the participating institutes and, in the future, the machine hall of the IT Center. In addition, the open space on the Melaten campus (approx.1 KM²) will be supplied with an outdoor network covering the distances between the buildings.

This will be technically implemented with a 4G anchor band at 2.3 GHz and a 5G network in the frequency range 3.7 to 3.8 GHz. In hall areas with special performance requirements, it is possible to extend the network with additional 5G radio units in the 26 GHz frequency range (millimeter waves, band N258).

The central coordination of the overall project is carried out by the Fraunhofer IPT in close cooperation with the IT Center of RWTH Aachen University.
