Information is an essential asset for research and teaching at our university and must therefore be adequately protected. Work and business processes are increasingly based on IT solutions. This means that the security and reliability of information and communication technology, as well as the trustworthy handling of information, are becoming increasingly important. Inadequately protected information is a frequently underestimated risk factor.

As a central IT service provider, the IT Center is responsible for the operational, cooperative, and informative aspects of its services. The goal is the secure use of information and communication technologies. Security aspects should be taken into account as early as possible in the development and procurement of IT systems and applications, as well as in their operation.

Spear Phishing Attacks

With the increasing spread of digital end devices such as smartphones and tablets, the risk of attacks is also rising. In addition to industrial espionage, data theft in the private sphere (passwords, e-mail addresses, etc.) is also steadily increasing.

Information for Employees Regarding Webex Vulnerabilities

The communication and collaboration tool Webex is currently being criticized for security incidents. The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) issued a vulnerability report on Webex on June 10, 2024.

After discussions with the manufacturer Cisco and our own intensive investigation, we were able to determine that RWTH Aachen University and its Webex users are not affected by the security incidents.

According to the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the current threat level in the national cyber space is higher than ever before. Universities must also take appropriate measures to protect their IT infrastructure and secure sensitive information.
