The IT Center has been operating the Laptop Rental Pool service since 2003 and provides RWTH Aachen University institutions with rental laptops within this service.
The Ubiquitous RWTH for Mobile E-Learning ("URMEL") project was originally funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Laptop-Rental-Pool was set up and operated within this project framework.
Due to changing conditions over the last 21 years, we have noticed that the number of institutions renting laptops and the number of laptops borrowed has declined sharply in recent years.
To this end, the rental figures before the coronavirus pandemic were compared with the figures from 2022/2023.
While a total of 26 facilities made use of the service in 2019, only 16 facilities did so in 2023.
The laptops currently provided are already five years old. Due to their age and declining use, it was decided not to replace them. As a result, the Laptop Rental Pool service will be discontinued on April 12, 2024.
