In October 2019, the Campus Melaten of RWTH Aachen University received the first license for the 5G research network. As a cooperation partner, the IT Center has now also joined the consortium. From now on, the IT Center is in charge of the fiber optic connection of the various subnetworks and the operation of the 5G network as well as the outdoor antennas of the 5G Industry Campus Europe.
In addition, the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT along with the IT Center agreed to expand their joint competence in the 5G area at RWTH Aachen University. More institutes at RWTH Aachen University are to be linked to this new technology. This expansion will allow further fields of application for this technology to be explored. Additionally, the Campus West and the RWTH Center should also be integrated into the 5G network in the future.
The project consortium:
- Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, Aachen (Project Management)
- Research Institute for Rationalization (FIR) e. V. at the RWTH Aachen
- Machine Tool Laboratory WZL of the RWTH Aachen
- IT Center of the RWTH Aachen
The research project "5G-Industry Campus Europe" is funded for three years by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) (Funding code: VB5GICEIPT)
