Potential applicants

Are you traveling or on a voluntary social year?

You would like to secure a apprenticeship as a MATSE now for after your return?

Contact us - we will be happy to support you!

Are you interested in MATSE? Then you've come to the right place!

If you want to become a MATSE trainee, there are several stages to go through:

  • There are various ways to find out more about a career at MATSE:
  • You clarify whether you meet the necessary requirements for an application. If you obtained your degree abroad, find out about the procedure for having your degree recognized. Please note that the language of instruction is German.
  • Once you have decided that you want to become a MATSE, apply for a training position at a training company.
  • Part of the application is a knowledge test that you must pass. Only when you have passed the knowledge test AND signed a training contract with a training company can you apply for the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science program at FH Aachen and be enrolled.

Now all the hurdles have been cleared: You're ready to go!

A new class starts the dual MATSE program in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science every September 1. You will receive all the information you need by mail.

After completing your dual degrees, you can continue your education... but that's the future!

What does the training involve?

With training as a mathematical-technical software developer, you will be more than “just” a programmer.

Mathematics and computer science are at the heart of the training. You will put the theoretical knowledge you have learned into practice by finding solutions to problems. MATSEs often develop these solutions against a scientific background. The training program to become a mathematical-technical software developer lasts three years, but can be shortened to two and a half years if your grades are particularly good. However, this is only possible in consultation with the training company.

What personal requirements do I need to meet?

  • You should enjoy mathematics and have the ability to think logically and analytically.
  • You also work and think systematically and have a good technical understanding.
  • MATSEs often seek solutions to problems as part of a team – in the sense that experts learn from experts. Interdisciplinary teamwork should therefore not be a problem for you.
  • An interest in programming is an advantage, but programming experience is not required. You will learn programming during your training. You can find more detailed information on the technical requirements under Application requirements.

What are the advantages of MATSE training?

Training as a mathematical-technical software developer offers you the advantage of practical learning. You will quickly become involved in projects at your training company and be assigned your own projects at an early stage, enabling you to independently apply the theory you have learned in practice at your training company. It is precisely this high practical component of your training that makes MATSEs highly sought after on the job market. The chances of being hired by the training companies are also very high, meaning that you can start your career immediately after successfully completing your training.

Would you prefer to pursue an academic career?

What makes MATSE training in Aachen, Cologne, and Jülich special is that It is offered as a training-integrated degree program. This means that, in addition to your training as a mathematical-technical software developer, you have the opportunity to complete a bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. This offers you the advantage of obtaining two degrees in three years: the IHK degree and the Bachelor of Science!

After successfully completing your training and studies, you also have the option of starting a master's degree program. For more information on career prospects after MATSE training, see Future as a MATSE.

Important information:

  • The training company provides the work equipment for dual MATSE students, including a laptop! You do not need to buy one yourself.
  • Many training companies support you by covering the social and student contributions to the FH Aachen – ask your training company about this.
  • Depending on their internal thematic focus, training companies support specializations in MediaMATSE or DataScienceMATSE. If you are interested, you should mention this in your interview.
